Kuvasz is lively and agile, tireless and powerful, very brave, intelligent, independent and confident. Born as a defender is willing and always ready to defend the family and the owner, owner´s property and their own lives. It is loyal and devoted not only to the owners but also the place where it lives.
This breed is only for experienced owner, briefed, gifted by natural authority and the ability to enforce the dog violently. It is not suitable for beginners or for people who are indecisive, inconsistent and capricious. It abounds naturally considerable territoriality, however early socialization and widest socialization, this innate tendency it can be fairly well compensated. The basis of education and training must be hospitable, but absolutely rigorous conduct of the owner. This breed is very grateful for all care and attention. It is absolutely reliable due to bad handling it could be too aggressive. Therefore, the usage of harsh methods during education and training we must avoid in advance.
It has to live in a family with children. It is necessary that dog could slowly get used all since its young age, it is ideal, if it can grow with them together. To other dogs it has tendency to behave dominant. To the people that it does not know it is extremely suspicious.
It needs plenty of exercise and a regular job, which may be a need for training in obedience competitions. It will also help its handling. The work with the herd, there is no problems, and it does not require any special training.
It is considered a breed that does not fit into the apartment, because it is a bit too active and needs a lot of space. It tolerates bad weather conditions, and it can therefore be accommodated year-round outdoor pen, but it cannot spend all its life in pen. The owner, he must thus devote more time with a dog, in the garden there must be in close contact and take a dog for long walks every day, for sure on a leash. Owner let never go a dog ahead, by the law of dog pack, who is first is leader of pack.
Kuvasz is a large sturdy dog with wavy white hair, whose overall appearance has to be the image of nobility and strength. Construction of the body must be balanced, harmonious and stout. It requires a short rectangular body frame. The height at withers for male is 71-76 cm, for female is from 66 to 70 cm. Weight of body, male is 48-62 kg, female is 37 to 50 kg.
The head is neat and noble, typical wedge-shaped, thin and dry. The skull should be broad and slightly domed forehead. The frontal slope must be very gradual. Muzzle should be broad and long, tapering evenly towards the nose. Mandibles control the powerful chewing muscles. The nasal bridge is straight, black nose, blunt-ended.
Lips must be on the edges with black pigmentation and tight fitting to the jaws and teeth. In the corners of the mouth are their serrated edges. Teeth are required strong, regular and complete. Desirable is a scissor bite.
The eyes are slightly slanted, almond-shaped, dark brown in colour. The edges of the eyelids must be black, close to the eyeballs. The earlobes should be moderately high set, hanging so that roughly the first third of its length arch projecting from the base and only then lying close to the head. They have the shape of a "V" with a rounded apex. In alertness, they are lifted, but they can never be pricked or corkscrew.
The neck is rather short, heavily muscled neck should be short. The body is viewed from the side, slightly elongated. Withers must be long and clearly a protruding above the top line of the body. The back is moderately long, straight, broad, very muscular and firm. The loin is short and forms a smooth continuation of the back. The croup is slightly sloping, powerfully muscled and broad.
The tail is low and the smooth continuation of the gently sloping croup. In repose hanging down with a slightly upward curved tip. It has been so long that reaching the hock. In alertness and movement can be carried above the level of the upper body lines.
The forechest is curved by the powerful muscles. The chest must be deep and long. The forelegs are in the position directly under the body, vertical to the wrists, vertical to ground and parallel. Shoulders are long, slanting, well muscled, elbows are dry and fairly close to the chest, the forearms are relatively long, straight, strong, dryly muscled. Wrist must be well developed and strong, pasterns should be relatively short, dry, slightly slanted.
Feet are round or oval in shape, compact. The fingers must be short, flexible, tightly knit and arched so that the middle at all affects the substrate. The pads are flexible, black claws to be tough, strong, black or slate gray colour.
The hindquarters are parallel legs are very long, broad and powerful muscles, which is strongly associated with the pelvis, knees are huge, legs are perpendicular to the substrate, the ankle should be broad, powerful, dry, sinewy. Hocks are long, vertical to ground. Movement is rich, long enough, flexible, roomy, agile, tenacious and tireless.
The coat should be fairly hard, undulating, slightly raised, without any tendency to felting. Below the coarser outer coat is softer soft undercoat. The body coat is long, about 4-12 cm. Coat colour should be pure white, but is permissible and ivory. Nose, eye rims and lips must be pigmented black, padded paws are black or slate gray. Desirable is a dark coloured palatum of the oral cavity, pink spots thereon are permissible.
All faults from the requirements of the standard are to be considered as defects and evaluate exactly according to the seriousness with regard to the health and welfare of the male or female. To negative defects include an abrupt stop, lack of pigment in the nose, the lips and eyelids, missing one tooth or several teeth from the incisors category (I), canines (C), second to fourth premolars (P2 - P4) and the first - 2nd molars (M1 - M2), lack of more than two first premolars (P1) on the molars 3 (M3) are disregarded, overshot or undershot jaw, irregular bite, the gap between upper and down teeth when the mouth is closed greater than 2 mm, entropion, ectropion, erect ears, tail still raised over the upper line of the body or curl over the back, coat with a tendency to fluffinesss, curly, waved or wiry legs covered with long hair, other than the standard laid down coat colour.
