English Mastiff

FCI:

English Mastiff Group II. - Pinschers and Schnauzers, Molossoid breeds, Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs, Section II. - Molossoid.

General Appearance:

English Mastiff s a combination of dignity, grandeur, confidence and courage. It is calm, dull, self-confident, balanced, utterly fearless and essentially good-natured dog. It loves its owner, it is dedicated to them and if necessary is always ready to defend effectively. It must be close to its family, it never should be permanently kept in an outdoor kennel. It guards reliably, by its natural character always with calmness and deliberation.

It is aware of its physical superiority over any alien it usually barks little, as if it knows that fingered to discourage appearance. It behaves to strangers indifferently, shyness or timidity would obviously be highly not acceptable.

Temperament & Behaviour:

Training is usually not a proper complicated procedure because it is a smart dog, fairly docile, friendly, but also sensitive. The base must be soft strictness. Its obedience is not slavish, it never loses its dignity and it must be prepared - useless commands that it might not understand because nobody taught it understand these commands. In such cases, it does not feel nice. Shouting at it is not a correct way how to deal with it. It can lose the trust in owner as a leader of mutual “pack”.
On the contrary you can attract it with warm praise and satisfied instructions. Just appropriately joyful intonation of your voice or positive stimulation it can help during training this dog.

Development of puppies and young adults is relatively slow, it is necessary to give them enough time. There is therefore no reason to try to rush in training, physically at the time they must not be overload.

With other dogs English Mastiff is well tolerated when it is used to them from an early age. So also it needs early, systematic and spontaneous socializing. It is child-friendly, patient and good-natured but it is not good for it when it is disturb all the time by children, etc. It needs own calm.

Ears should be small, thin, wide apart, and as high as the sides of the head, so that when viewed from the front is a continuation of the transverse upper line of the skull at its highest point.

The chest should be broad and deep so that it extends between forelegs low to the ground. The ribs are rounded clearly rounded rear must be sufficiently long and extend close to the hips (far back), the distance between them and the hips should be short.
