History: The Kuril Islands have been owned by Russia since 1875, but formerly by Japan. Therefore, it is also likely that the Kurilean Bobtail Shorthair is coming from a number of Japanese Bobtails that were brought by the Japanese to the islands. Outside of the islands or Russia, this breed is abundant. In Russia, the breed was recognized in 1995, by worldwide eleven years later.
Temperament: These cats are friendly, balanced with a huge ability to adapt. They are also very nice, but not intrusive. They really enjoy spending with cats and other animals, they are especially getting well with them. A typical feature for a Short-haired Kurilean Bobtail is that it is creeping in many situations.
Body: The muscular body has a subtle look. The strong hind legs are longer than the front. The tail is about eight centimetres long, in a calm bend, in a guard or running erect. It may also be slightly spiral or cranked. A relatively large head is wedge-shaped with well-developed, rounded faces. The high-mounted ears are medium-sized and downy in the bolts. The medium-length nose is slightly bent. The large, almond-shaped eyes are set slightly upside down and have an alert, curious look.
Coat: The semi-long coat is silky smooth, with little undercoat. The coat is longer around the collar, abdomen and thighs. The tail has a nice pumpkin shape, and there are tufts of hairs between its fingers. The coat is fully developed until around the second year of age.
Care: As far as hair care is concerned, it is enough to brush a Kurilean Bobtail Shorthair once a week with a comb. The moulting time is very short and intensive. In this time of summer, care should be taken more intensively. The ears should be cleaned and claws cut too.
Colour variants: Kurilean Bobtail Shorthair can be recognized only in natural colours, e.g. in black, red, with white spots and with or without them.
