General Appearance:
Its character is kind, totally non-aggressive, friendly, calm, calm, easy-going, intelligent and devoted to their human "pack". It adores human society and loves children, too. It is more playful than most other Spaniards. It feels as a full member of the family - "pack", which is prepared if necessary to defend (barking). It likes barking like, but not noisy. It is compatible well with cats if it got used to cats in young age. It tends to be jealous of the owner, when in contact with other dogs and cats it cannot be ignored.
Thanks to its empathy and peaceful, it is suitable for canistherapy. It was originally used as a hunting dog for the searching in game and reporting "reports" by barking about the presence of prey. It's slower, but more diligent and attentive. When it is hunting actively and vigorously, it has an excellent sense of smell and it is ready for retrieving the preys, it does not avoid the water.
Temperament & Behaviour:
Its training is not entirely easy; some trainees seem to be stubborn. Training must be sensitive, gentle, frequently reinforced by positive stimuli (praising and snacks). It learns quickly, but hates coercion or unnecessary haste. Trainee needs to be a calm and patient. It requires nice and consistent leadership.
It has a strong sense of smell, if it finds a wild animal, it starts chasing, so calling back it is not easy for this breed, the dog is hunting.
Coat requires regular care, especially after a stay in the countryside it needs to brush properly. It is very difficult for this breed a high summer temperature.
Body:
Sussex spaniel is a small strong but sturdy dog strong body and a rectangular body frame. The ideal height at the withers is 38-41 cm. Body weight is about 23 kg.
The head is balanced, broad skull, moderately rounded between the earlobes - either completely flat or convex dome. It has longitudinal front furrow. Browridges are significant. The occipital protuberance should be distinct, but not pointed. The frontal slope (stop) should be significant. The nose must have a liver-brown colour. The nostrils are wide open.
Jaws should be strong, with a perfect complete scissor bite.
Their expression is slight. Conjunctiva may be just barely visible. The earlobes are hanging, set slightly lower, just above the eye line. They are strong and quite large. Close to head.
The neck is long, strong in the neck slightly arched, carried so that the head is not too high above the topline of the body. On the neck may be only a small adjoining lobe front chest hair forms a distinct "jabot" (frill).
The body is with strong topline of the body extends horizontally from the withers to the hips, without noticeable transitions between the individual spots. The back should be muscular, broad and solid, as well as the shoulders. Chest deep and capacious, ribs must be long enough.
The forelegs are rather short and strong. Shoulders should be oblique, freely movable. The shoulder bones are strong, properly muscled wrist to be powerful, strong, pasterns short, very strong bones.
The hindquarters should be short, strong, strong bones. It may be neither shorter than the forelegs, neither too angulated. Thigh bones are strong, powerfully muscled, hocks should be big and strong. Feet should be round, with well-developed padded. Inter digital are well coated.
Thick coat fitting area and does not tend to form curls. The undercoat must be very thick and represents protection from the weather. The earlobes are covered with soft, wavy hair, which may not be too long. Forelegs are distinct from behind "feathering" on the hind "trousers". The tail is covered with dense hair, but does not form a flag underneath. Colour is deep golden brown. The tail is short, low set is always carried below the topline of the body.
