Otterhound

FCI:

Otterhound - Group VI. - Scenthounds and related breeds, Section - Large sized hounds.

General Appearance:

Character´s foundation is a "great personality". It looks classy, dignified and a little sad, in fact it is a nice character and serene, friendly and affectionate. It can be as wildly cheerful and lively. Lacks a sense of humour, and regardless of its serious appearance often begins as a clown. Remarkable there are the voice dispositions. Its voice is deep, melodious.

It is based clearly socially. Definitely it cannot spend most of its life in an outdoor pen, even if it is due to coat very resistant to bad weather. For its character's foundation it is not good.

To children it is nice, but when the game into which it plunges enthusiastically inherited from Terriers, it could bring down the smaller ones. It is not watching and it is not defensive. Incoming people it joyfully welcomes, but at the intruders it acts preventively its size and unreadable expression of its face, which covers the hair.

Temperament/Behaviour:

The education is quite easy, in general, it is not because of its confidence obedient, but when it starts, there is important a sheer consistency, adequate patience, gentle and sensitive approach and proper owner of perseverance it must be well manageable.

It hates harsh methods of education or training. Otherwise it responds to passive resistance, it is not communicating. Owner can never hurry during training. Very important it is early, completely nonviolent, but the broader socialization and timely, immediately after the takeover initiated education. The later it starts the more difficult and more demanding for the owner.

For the smallest puppies must be used playful methods of education and training completed with positive motivation (praise, a treat). Training must be daily and may be even longer than other breeds, mainly it depends on the owner whether he can maintain interest throughout the dog at the appropriate level.

Body:

It's a medium-sized dog with strong, straight legs, rough coat and a head that is an expression of grandeur. Body structure is sturdy and easy to move, easy. Coarse hair and big feet are typical breed characteristics. Height at withers is about 69 cm, males and about 61 cm females.

Jaws should be strong and powerful teeth firmly embedded in them. It requires a perfect and regular scissor bite. Upper six incisors overlap tightly six down ones, both of which are embedded in the jaws.

Eyes intelligent expression should be adequately stored deep in the orbit. The conjunctiva can be seen slightly, eye rims should not be too loose. Eye colour and the colour of the eyelid margins correspond to the colour of the coat. For individuals blue-and-tan and blond with blue badges can have a nut-brown colour of the iris. Yellow eyes are undesirable.

Earlobes, which represent unique breed characteristics, must be long, hanging, set in the outer corners of the eye. If you are without violence stretched forward and achieve its ends to the nose. Corkscrews are twisted, their front edges facing inward so those resemble a bit hinge, which is very typical.

The tail is set high and in the heat of passion or upward motion carried, but they should never be curled over the croup and loin. The rest may be hanging down.

Strong at the root, at the end pointed. The last vertebra is reaching the hock joints. It may be straight or slightly curved. The hair on the underside is usually longer and richer than the upper.

The forelegs have strong bones and from the elbow to the substrate are equal. The hindquarters should be strong and heavily muscled when viewed from any angle. Behind their attitude has to be neither too broad nor too narrow. Angulations are reasonable.

The coat is long 4-8 cm, thick, hard, rough, bristly appearance, waterproof but not wiry. On the head and distal portions of the limbs is usually softer. The undercoat must be conspicuously dense. By touch, topcoat and undercoat is oily.
