It excels in an immense stamina and a very fine sense of smell. It never minds even relatively high snowpack. Despite these useful properties of one of the rarest Norwegian breeds and out of its origin country it is virtually unknown.
This is bad for this breed that is recommended with regard to its talent as an exclusive hunting dog. Despite the fact that it is friendly, kind and affectionate to the owner and members of his family and it could be a pleasant companion dog, hunters argue that the companion of man does not fit, because in their opinion the "real hunting dog" does not have to be a family dog as this reportedly decreases its performance.
Legacy hunters that coexistence with humans it is declining its hunting performance, it does not reflect to reality. Hounds, that have the opportunity to live permanently with friendly owner, who pays the dog enough attention, it creates a relationship that leads to maximum effort to please owner by dog´s work and its performance is therefore with proper leadership excellence. The dog convict to live all the life with the exception of hunting work in an outdoor pen, such a relationship it is never created.
It's a dog compact body, designed primarily for hunting hares. It should be a medium-sized, solid, compact body and a square body frame. Height at wither is from 50 to 58 (ideal. 54) cm and female is from 47 to 55 (ideal. 51) cm.
The head is adequately large and appropriately wide, but not coarse. Be moderate length, wedge-shaped, but not at the end, level with the nose pointed. The skull is slightly arched above as seen from the front and from the side. Desirable is a scissor bite.
Eyes are required dark brown, medium size, not bulking, calm and serious expression. The conjunctiva must not be apparent.
The earlobes are suspended, moderately high set, not too wide or excessively long, taper towards the rounded peaks. They should be soft and thin. Not adhere closely to the cheek. Stretched ahead without violence is no more than half the length of the muzzle.
The tail is set at the upper line of the body. At the root has to be strong and towards the tip tapers. It is carried straight or slightly curved upward, suspended reaching to the hocks.
The chest should be reasonably broad, long, deep and roomy. No loose ribs must be quite long, so that the chest was the longest. Its depth is equal to about 1/2 height at withers. The forelegs are dryly muscled, strong, sinewy and never coarse. Feet are straight and have high-arched, tightly knit toes with firm and thickly padded. Inter digital spaces are above and below feathered.
The hindquarters should have a broad and muscular thighs, properly bent knees, long leg, correctly angled, wide and dry hocks and short, wide and seen from the side slightly sloping insteps. Feet are the same as the forequarters. Dewclaws should be considered permissible, but may not be duplicated.
Hair is straight, slightly rough to the touch, dense, shiny and not too short. On the back of the thighs and on the tail is richer, but not too long.
Hair colouring can be bright red or yellow-red, often with black shading on head, back and tail with white spots or without them, black and tan, usually with white markings, white with solid red or yellow -red spots or dots or black and tan characters. Each colour must be sharply separated from other colours.
To negative defects include aggressiveness.
